Yellow lines etched into my hazel green eyes
trace golden designs that shine back
illuminate life under savannah horizons
when sunset over the motherland
served as guidance
a constant reminder
to keep my paws to the soil
imprinting the patient steps of survival

I was once the queen of my pride
and the instincts of this lioness
still rumbles deep inside
for I hunt with humility
honor my prey
recognize my responsibility
to carry the darkness of night
unto the light of new day

with fierce gentility I caress the wounded with my tongue
my teeth deliver healing unto the wounded one
who is not afraid to die in the jaws of a queen
to be chosen to feed my children
to be saved to be freed

from this earthly realm I know it’s a chase
but the secret of the strong is to move together my brother
is to keep the pace

be patient my sisters
gather in the grassroots
as we all prepare to face the challenge
such as the drylands
extending fro miles around us
desertifying our reign

the river of memory flows underground
our bellies can guide us back to the sound the same
to the watering holes once kissed by our mothers
who taught us to share this sacred source with all others

to be a queen of the wilderness
is not always to be wild and vicious
but to understand the delicate balance
between warrior wisdom
and maternal loving kindness
